The Spirit of the Ring or Bakura as I call them is an ancient spirit from 3000 years ago (5000 if you watch the dub) He sealed his soul inside the Sennen Ring, which he won after beating Priest Mahaado. His family was killed in order to create the Sennen items and he thought Pharaoh Atemu (Yami no Yuugi) was to blame for this. This caused a deep hatred inside of him and he became the Thief King.

Even to the end, he hated the Pharaoh as the final battle showed but sadly, he does not defeat him. He destroyed when the items are buried at the end, when Atemu crosses over. *cough* He will be back.. okay no, that’s just my wishful thinking.
